Connected by a scenic route to Baratti, has Etruscan origins and was one of the most important centers of antiquity for the processing and trading of iron that was mined in the island of Elba.

From its promontory overlooking the sea with the Gulf of Baratti on one side and the other Buca delle Fate. The imposing citadel and the walls were erected to defend the attacks of pirates around the first half of the fifteenth century. The small and cozy city center houses a private museum with archaeological finds and some craft shops and local produce. Populonia is not far from the archaeological park of Baratti-Populonia .
